Fried idli or masala idli is a spicy crunchy South Indian snack. It is made by frying the leftover idli till they are crisp and then toss in spices.
Idli is a traditional South Indian breakfast made by steaming the fermented batter of rice and lentils. Fried Idli can be made from fresh idlis. But a day old idlis are best suited as they won’t break while frying and absorbs less oil.
During my school days I usually have these fried idlis with my evening tea. The recipe I am sharing here is that of my mom’s version of Masala Idli. But the flavor variations are not limited to this.
Once the idlis are fried, sauté it with vegetables to make stir fries. Or mix it with other spices and then temper it with urad dal, mustard seeds and curry leaves. All I am saying is that the options are not limited. Leftover idlis can turn into a hearty meal!!! Fried Idlis can be served with tomato ketchup, Chutney or with Sambar.
